Chris Spedding w/ Anton Fig & Keith Lentin – Factory Records, Dover, NJ
One of the first music clubs I went to back in the day was the Showplace in Dover, NJ. I saw Ramones, The Plasmatics, David Johansen and and many more including Robert Gordon. Chris Spedding was Robert Gordon’s partner in crime and recorded and played with him many times over the years and it’s possible that he was on the stage at the Showplace over 40 years ago when I was there. So it’s only fitting that the legendary Mr. Spedding, now in his 70’s, appeared in the Lounge at this Dover, NJ store along with well known drummer Anton Fig (David Letterman) and bassist Keith Lentin (Spider).
Their set showcased Spedding’s virtuoso playing and revisited moments throughout his musical past including his hit “Motor Bikin'”. It’s was pretty nice to be settled into a comfortable chair or couch along with BYOB beer and bourbon while listening to these veterans do their thing. Comfortable chair you say? Yes, The Lounge at Factory Records is a comfortable, almost too cozy space in a small room off the main floor of the record store. It’s a great place to catch an intimate show and for larger crowds the seating is removed.
It’s ironic that Factory Records is located in Dover. Factory Records has not only brought vinyl back to north New Jersey but also live music. Speaking of vinyl, not only does the store have a selection that rivals any in NJ but it also has the sign from legendary record store, Vintage Vinyl, that closed it’s doors a couple of years ago. The Factory Records purchased the sign and proudly displays it inside the store. (Vintage Vinyl was a special place for me starting back when I was in college and I visited between classes back when the store was located in Irvington, NJ. I even worked there for a couple of weeks as a vacation fill-in).
